Fluid Dynamics: Staffman-Taylor Viscous Fingering

So today i was alone in the lab and not feeling like doing work, so i spent 30 mins building a Hele-Shaw Cell, filled it with Glycerin and injected some food coloring. Luckly i had some visitors come right before i tested it. It's a pretty beautiful thing, i think with some modifications you could make some pretty cool art this way. What'd be really cool is to inject acrylic paints and let the fingers dry out to make some sweet coasters or something.

If you like this sort of thing, you can check out a sweet gallary of beautiful fluids photos over at CU's Flow Vis course website or go geek out at F*** Yeah Fluid Dynamics.
